Vermont St

Everybody knows Lombard St, the 'crookedest street' in, america, california, whatever. (left)

But there's another street that's just as crooked but not as well known, one block of Vermont St.

As it turns out, this is just a few blocks from my apartment. I went on a walking tour and I took some pictures. This map on the right shows where I went (and my apartment building is at the bottom).

But see, the whole thing is on a hill and the sattelite photo just doesn't give you a sense of how it really looks. This is better. Remember the landmarks: the start, the crooked part, the community garden at the top of the hill, and at the end I crossed a blue bridge across the freeway.

This is at the Start, looking the other way. Notice that this is a hilly neighborhood. My apartment is one long block to the right.

Now we're starting to go uphill. Actually I'm walking this in the reverse direction from the way cars drive. (It's a one-way street.)

You can see it start to curve.

Yes, people live on the street, and park their cars. This is basically the same view as the last photo.

The street is switchbacks. You get better traction this way instead of one big slope.

for pedestrians, you can walk up the stairs.

This is a self-portrait. There weren't any mirrors nearby.

This picture and the next are the same place, just looking in different directions.

It's the same truck. Note peole have their driveways right on the street.

There's actually a lot of room, this is a car going down.

Looking up, these are some of the houses along the side.

ON the other side of the street, is a beautiful view. This is looking northwest...

and this is looking southwest. John Gingrich (my friend from high school) works at the hospital complex you see down below.

Yeah, and here's that truck again. I have no idea why people in this neighborhood have so many trucks, seems stupid.

Almost at the top, I'm walking up the stairs next to the road.

and this is the view looking down the street

and looking down the path

Finally at the top , there's a playground.

An suv running down the street. You can just barely see it.

Never point your cellphone camera into the sun. This is the signs at the top, warning you of what's coming. Because you can't really see it until it's too late.

hmmm what is this. On one switchback, looking through the hedges to the next switchback down.

now we're at the top of the hill, so this is the view of downtown, on the other side of the hill.

A few blocks down is this 'community garden'. It's open, no locks or anything, and it overlooks the city.

This is the garden, looking from above.

Beehives, with real bees, in the garden.

OK, it overlooks the city, but also the freeway, immediately below. this is the 'lookout' point on the map.

Looking southwest again. The hill lear the right is Bernal Heights, near where I lived last time I lived in San Francisco.

Some, I don't know, flowers in the garden.

Most houses in the neighborhood look like these.

This is the 'blue bridge'. Over the freeway.

There's a circular ramp on the other side.

and then I was walking around and I saw these three 'Doggie Diner' dogs. Pretty strange. Probably some artist.
